Across the Adriatic. Over the centuries.
Evoking sails and shorelines. Combining a nuanced maritime palette with a powerful mercantile history.
One of a kind.
Another necklace I never took time to finish after starting it 20 or so years ago while home between shows. A long gestation, to be sure, but I’m happy with this piece at last. I remember struggling with the spacer beads long ago - a challenge that was easily resolved in the end, after the passage of time.
Made with:
Rare antique Venetian glass beads striped cobalt, oxblood red, and milky white under an outer layer of transparent glass, now bearing a gentle patina that speaks to their world travels. After being shipped to Africa long ago, where they were highly esteemed, these beads returned to the West, which esteemed them anew. Their irregular shapes and lengths flow from the fact that they were made by hand in the late 19th or early 20th centuries.
Small sterling silver beaded spheres.
Black glass disk beads made in the Czech Republic.
An oxidized sterling silver lobster clasp. Generously sized to simply wearing.
Sixteen hand drilled, refined and oxidized sterling silver disc beads, framing the two ends of each striped bead.
Strung on a double length of nylon-coated steel cable for maximum durability.
Weight:
Light to medium.
Dimensions:
1/2” diameter maximum by 20 3/4” long
Additional Information:
Can be shortened or lengthened somewhat. A small additional charge may apply, depending upon specifications.
I will sign the clasp before shipping.
All of the Venetian glass beads show signs of wear. The outer glasss casings have light scratches and occasional light chips or small inner fissures that refract light.
The stripe colors on the Venetian glass beads are not quite as bright as they may appear in some of my photos, which made the beads look just a little brighter and fresher than they actually are. That said, even with slightly softer, more faded colors, the beads are visually beautiful.
