The colorful versions feature Czech glass beads, stitched into 3-dimensional shapes using a mainland Chinese beading technique I discovered by accident while walking through Stanley Market in Hong Kong during the Lantern Festival in February.
I entered a typical clothing shop and looked up at the ceiling, which was hung with small red and yellow beaded lanterns. I asked if I could purchase a few and was told no, I could not. I sensed that the clerks had dealt with quite a few tedious American tourists, and I didn’t blame them for politely dismissing me.
Long story short, I asked if I could speak to the boss and eventually, he came out from the back. He went out of his way to be patient with me and after declining several times, he finally agreed to sell me a few of the beaded lanterns for the equivalent of 50 cents each. I came home and reverse engineered them - and this is one of three structures that resulted. Since it didn’t look like a lantern to me, I decided to call it a “pillow.”
The Black & Sterling Pillow is made with Czech glass beads and bright sterling silver beads that I will polish some more before shipping.
