MAY 2007
Valerie was awarded a second travel
grant from the Portland Bead Society for research on ancient Chinese
beadwork in China. 

JANUARY 18-31, 2007

Valerie traveled toTurkey as part
of her work for the International Bead and Beadwork Conference (IBBC), which will take place in Istanbul from Nov. 22-25, 2007.
Valerie is-Co Chair of the Conference's
Academic Sessions Committee,
and is in charge of all beadwork-related presentations.

While in Turkey, Valerie exhibited her jewelry designs at the Divan Hotel in Istanbul at the invitation of Mrs. Cigdem Simavi, and at the beautiful Nar Gallery in Ankara.

Valerie also taught a 1-day workshop
at the Gezi Hotel in Istanbul on a Chinese netting technique, and along with Asli Mutlu, appeared as a guest on the "Derya Baykal" 
a daytime TV show In Istanbul.

JANUARY 11, 2007

Valerie has been nominated as a candidate in the Fashion category for a National Design Award.  The National Design Awards program is sponsored by the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, which is part of the
Smithsonian Institution. 

Ten National Design Awards in various categories will be bestowed to winning candidates in New York City in October, 2007.  The awards celebrate design excellence and innovation, and serve as a critical gauge of the impact of design on the quality of American life.  For more information, please visit www.nationaldesignawards.org

JUNE 28, 2006
Valerie's life and work are the subject of
a feature article by Pam O'Connor in Bead and Button Magazine's August 2006 issue.

FEBRUARY 17, 2006
Valerie has received a grant from the Portland Bead Society to conduct beadwork research in Jiangxi and Zhejiang Provinces in China in 2006.

JANUARY 27, 2006

Valerie has received a Guido Grant
from the Bead Study Trust of London,
to study in person probable examples
of Ming-era (ca. 1368-1644) Chinese
beadwork in collections in Tokyo
and Kyoto, Japan.
